Need gear for this epic Northern Michigan race? We’ve got all the equipment you’ll need to make it across the finish line! Click the appropriate links below to reserve your required equipment. Don’t delay—quantities are limited!

Please be sure the name used here matches the name on the race registration. You must submit one purchase for each individual registered participant.

By purchasing your equipment rental(s), you are agreeing to all terms stated below. All rentals are non-refundable.

2018 M22 Challenge Kayak Rental Information

Kayaks will be placed in a separate Rental Kayak Staging Area. During the transition from the Bike Portion to the Paddle Portion of the race, those who have rented kayaks should immediately head to the Rental Kayak Staging Area. Renters will then grab the boat of their choice, on a first-come-first-serve basis from this rental fleet. Renters can be assured of an adequate number of kayaks available in this staging area, guaranteeing a quick transition from land to water.

All boats being rented are Old Town Kayaks, with the vast majority being the Loon 111 style. Additional models include Loon 138s, Vapor 10s, Otters, and a small number of Helix Sit-on-top Kayaks.

The fee for all Kayak Rentals is $40. This fee includes: kayak delivery and pick up to and from the event site, paddle & lifejacket.

There is a limited number of rental boats, so participants are encouraged to finalize their rental to ensure availability.

It is imperative that you visit the Crystal River Outfitters booth at Friday’s Packet Pickup to additionally check in for your rental.

2018 M22 Challenge Bike Rental Information

Rental Bikes will be placed on specific Crystal River Outfitters/The Cyclery designated racks. Bikes will be marked with participant’s last name. These bikes will be transported to the race site after Friday’s Packet Pickup. 

All bikes come with standard flat pedals. Participants are welcome to bring their own pedals for Road Bike and 29er rentals if they choose. 

Helmets are included in the rental and MUST be worn during the race. 

During Friday’s Packet Pickup, please check-in at The Cyclery to get final adjustments made to your bike. It is also imperative that you visit the Crystal River Outfitters booth at Friday’s Packet Pickup to additionally check in for your rental.

2018 M22 Challenge SUP Rental Information

SUPs will be placed in the Rental Kayak Staging Area. During the transition from the Bike Portion to the Paddle Portion of the race, those who have rented SUPs should immediately head to the Rental Kayak Staging Area. SUPs will be marked with participant’s name. 

Rentals include paddle and lifejacket. Participants MUST wear the lifejacket and have the leash attached at all times. 

It is imperative that you visit the Crystal River Outfitters booth at Friday’s Packet Pickup to additionally check in for your rental.


To proceed with equipment rental, please read and agree to the following:


In consideration of the use of the equipment, facilities, and/or services of Wiesen Properties, LLC, doing business as Crystal River Outfitters and The Cyclery (“Crystal River Outfitters”), the undersigned acknowledges and agrees as follows: I accept for use, as is, the equipment in good condition and accept full responsibility for care of the equipment while in my possession. I will be responsible for the prompt replacement, at full retail value, of all rental equipment not returned or otherwise damaged, other than reasonable wear and tear, which results from the use of the equipment. All instructions on use of the equipment have been made clear to me and I understand the function of the equipment.

LATE FEE. I agree to pay one additional day’s rental rate for all equipment not returned to Crystal River Outfitters on or before the date and time due.

WARNING. There are significant elements of risk in any adventure sport or activity associated with the use or presence water craft, including bun not limited to canoes, kayak, stand-up paddle boards, and the use of related equipment. These risks are inherent in canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding and may be present even if the equipment is used properly and even in still water.

BICYCLE RENTALS. I understand that Crystal River Outfitters has given me the opportunity to inspect the bicycle equipment being rented and I believe it is in good condition and acceptable for my use. I have been advised to check the condition of the bicycle equipment prior to use, and to notify Crystal River Outfitters of any problems or defects discovered in the bicycle equipment. I understand there are elements of risk in engaging in cycling activities and wish to do so despite the possible dangers and risks involved in same. I agree to assume and take upon myself all the risks and responsibilities in any way arising or associated with this activity. I agree to properly use and care for the rented bicycle equipment while it is in my possession and I am aware that deviation from proper use and care may greatly increase the likelihood of accident or injury. I agree to promptly secure the rental equipment and lock all bicycle equipment in legal locations while not in my possession. The safety of accommodating passengers in any rented equipment (including, but not limited to, any child related equipment) it is my responsibility and I agree to monitor the condition of the bicycle equipment and its passengers at all times. I agree to wear an approved safety helmet and to insure that all passengers and those for whom I am responsible wear appropriately sized and approved safety helmets. I agree not to use the rental equipment in conditions of reduced visibility, including but not limited to darkness. I agree not to lend the rented bicycle equipment to others while it is in my possession, and if I were to do so, and persons loaned to were to suffer loss as a consequence, I assume all responsibility for same.

SCOPE OF RELEASE. This Release of Liability covers all activities indirectly or directly associated with the use of Crystal River Outfitters equipment,facilities, services, and activities organized by, sponsored by, or directed by Crystal River Outfitters (“Crystal River Outfitters Activities”).

RISK FACTORS. I understand and acknowledge that the Crystal River Outfitters Activities involve risks such as, but not limited to, the following: (i)changing water flow, conditions or current; (ii) collision with other participants, any portion of the interior of the craft, other water craft, manmade or natural objects, including overhanging, submerged and/or semi-submerged trees, branches, rocks and boulders; (iii) cold weather and heat related injuries and illnesses including hyperthermia, frostbite, heat exhaustion, sun stroke, and dehydration; (iv) inclement weather, variances and extremes of wind, weather and temperature, the presence of insects and animals; (v) sense of balance, physical coordination, ability to swim, and/or ability to follow directions; (vi) loss of control of the craft, collision, capsizing, and sinking of the craft which can result in wetness, injury, exposure to the elements, hypothermia and drowning; (vii) getting in and out of the craft; (viii) travel, including hiking, portaging and travel to and from the related and unrelated activities; (ix) the presence of wild animals, including marine life forms, (x) unavailability of emergency aid services and emergency medical care. I acknowledge that Crystal River Outfitters Activities, as well as other foreseeable or unforeseeable factors or circumstances, may result in a RISK OFPROPERTY DAMAGE, BODILY INJURY, AND POSSIBLY DEATH.

ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By executing this Release of Liability, I expressly assume all risk that arises from participation in Crystal River Outfitters Activities, the acts of others, the unavailability of emergency care, and any other foreseeable or unforeseeable factors or circumstances related to the Crystal River Outfitters Activities. I assume all risk of injury, wrongful death or property damage related to the Crystal River Outfitters Activities.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF RULES, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. I acknowledge that I have read and understood all of the rules, policies and procedures relating to Crystal River Outfitters Activities and understands that the safe and proper use of the facilities, equipment and participation in Crystal River Outfitters Activities is dependent upon carefully following such rules, policies and procedures. I agree to wear a properly fitted and fastened U.S. Coastguard approved flotation device (lifejacket) while aboard a boat or on or in the water. I understand that canoeing and kayaking should only be undertaken after proper instruction and training and that Crystal River Outfitters is not providing such training in connection with the rental of equipment. I assume full responsibility for deciding where, when and with whom to paddle. I acknowledge and agree that the rental equipment provided by Crystal River Outfitters is for my sole and exclusive use of the Participants listed on this Agreement and may not be used by any other persons.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND SKILLS. I represent that I haves the requisite skills, physical abilities and mental abilities necessary for proper and safe use of the Crystal River Outfitters equipment, facilities and services and to participate in the Crystal River Outfitters Activities. I agree that if I have any questions as to what skills, qualifications or training are necessary to properly use the equipment or facilities, or to participate in the Crystal River Outfitters Activities, then I shall direct such questions to the appropriate staff member on site.

RELEASE. I hereby release, discharge, waive, disclaim. and relinquish all claims, actions or causes of action against Crystal River Outfitters and its officers, employees and agents and agrees not to sue them on account of or in conjunction with any claims, causes of action, injuries, damage, cost of expenses arising out of Crystal River Outfitters Activities, including those based on death, bodily injury or property damage whether or not caused by participation in Crystal River Outfitters Activities or the negligence of Crystal River Outfitters.

WAIVER. I waive the protection afforded by any statute or law in any jurisdiction whose purpose, substance, and/or effect is to provide that a general release shall not extend to claims, material or otherwise which the person giving the release does not know of or suspect at the time of executing the release. This means, in part, that I am releasing unknown future claims.

INDEMNITY. I agree to indemnify and defend Crystal River Outfitters, and its officers, employees and agents (each, an “Indemnitee”) and hold them harmless from any or all claims, causes of action, damage judgments, costs or expenses, including attorney fees which in any way arise from my participation in the Crystal River Outfitters Activities which include but are not limited to damages to or destruction of any property of an Indemnitee, of any others, injury or death of the undersigned or anyone else or any liability arising from the act or negligent act of an Indemnitee, myself, or anyone else.

PROPERTY DAMAGE. I agree to pay for any or all damages to any property or equipment of Indemnitee caused by myself or any listed Participants either negligently, willfully, or otherwise.

REPRESENTATIVES. I have executed this Release of Liability for myself and my heirs, assigns, and legal representatives.

INSURANCE. I understand that Crystal River Outfitters may not carry participant insurance. I acknowledge that I either have appropriate insurance or, in its absence, agree to pay all cost of rescue and/or medical services as may be incurred on my behalf.

CONSENT AND RELEASE ON BEHALF OF MINOR. In the event that the Participants listed on Page 1 of this Agreement are minors or are under the age of 18 years old, I acknowledge that I am the parent and/or legal guardian of said minor. I agree that I have read and understand the terms and conditions of this Agreement which involve surrendering valuable legal rights of the minor and myself and agree to be bound by all the terms of this Agreement. I also consent to the minor’s participation in the Crystal River Outfitter Activities by the minor.
